Where I live irrigation dams are a common site. They are used to direct the water in the fields to where you want it to go when you flood irrigate. An old familiar site is watching my dad carry the dam over his shoulder changing the water daily in the hay fields. A pretty simple device often weighed down by the rocks seen nearby as it’s placed in the ditch where you don’t want the water to go. Once backed up with the water prohibited to flow by, it makes for a good place to play in the heat of the summer. One day as dad was changing the irrigation water he noticed the water wasn’t coming down the ditch where the dam had been removed. Going back to investigate he found Kelly our Saint Bernard lying in the ditch enjoying the opportunity to be cool, creating a dam of his own that prevented the water from flowing.
Spiritually we need to be looking for anything that is preventing the Living Water of Jesus from flowing freely in our lives. Things that stop the process of flood irrigating our spirits with Jesus that the benefit of having Him in us may reach every area of our lives. It doesn’t matter if it was something we threw in the ditch or something that crawled in on its own like our dog Kelly that backed the water up.
If something is prohibiting the Living Water of Christ from flowing by, it’s our job to pay attention and get it removed. It may be an old habit, bad attitude, busyness, lack of commitment, or anything else it doesn’t matter they need to go. We are the ones in charge of how it flows. The dry spots in our field or lives don’t need to be. There’s plenty of Water to go around, plenty of Jesus for everyone to benefit.
