The root systems of a tree or plant are vital. It is the lifeline that keeps it living, the resource of all its food. Ruin the root system and you ruin the plant. It’s very important that the roots are deep and well established in the ground in order to withstand the elements of the weather as well as the normal wear and tear of simple daily existence.
If weakened in any way or not well cared the tree will die. The first big storm that comes along will take the tree or plant down as it did this juniper tree. It didn’t matter how many storms this tree endured over the years once the root system gave way the tree quickly followed.
Our root system in Jesus is just as vital. The deeper our root into Christ and His teachings the stronger and more productive we are. Therefore, giving us the ability to withstand the elements in life that can weaken and ruin our root system. Elements such as medical problems, financial struggles, family issues, addictions, stress, false teachings, and the basic wear and tear of daily living are sure to do it if we don’t watch out.
Jesus himself said that if we don’t have the right root system we would wither up and die scorched or burnt up by the kind of things that Satan uses to bring God’s children down. Things such as disobedience, doubt, temptation, discouragement, false beliefs, and lack of focus on the right thing, Jesus Christ himself. At the first sign of trouble or persecution those with no root system easily come down. Believing only for a short while merely to fall away.
We are responsible for our own root system. Therefore we need to start out in the right soil, the planting soil of God’s word called the Bible where He tells us what we need to do as He guides us to the harvest in Heaven where the growing ends and life truly begins. If we make the right choices we can be stronger than the elements in life. We can withstand the wear and tear of daily living as long as we stay established in the food source of God’s Word, rooted and grounded in the lasting elements of His love, discipline, and grace.
We may have to take a windstorm here and there. That may bend our branches but it can never knock us over, thanks to Jesus, thanks to His love. How deep the roots are up to us. It’s a daily choice, a lifetime commitment as we establish ourselves in Christ and stay there for lasting root health, for eternal blessings.
