As you travel down the road you may notice several different signs encouraging you to stop and pick your own corn, fruit, or veggies. You will even see wrecking yards for cars that permit you to “pull your own” car part needed to fix your current vehicle. You can stop and pick and pull or go to the local store and buy what you are after. The choice is yours.
When it comes to getting dressed for Heaven you won’t see the sign “pick your own clothes.” God has given us specific instructions on how we are to dress for Heaven. We are to clothe ourselves with Christ in order to walk as He walked, behave as He behaved.
It’s a task that requires action on our part as we “put on” or clothe ourselves in Christ. The clothes in your closet aren’t going to jump off the hanger and on to you, you have to pick out what you are going to wear and put it on. It’s no different when it comes to dressing for Heaven except we don’t get to “pick our on clothes” that we want to wear but we are required to put on what God tells us to wear.
How can we walk as Jesus walked if we’ve never seen Him stride down the street? What we are to look at is not His physical walk but the way He walked or behaved spiritually to pattern our lives after. It’s not like mimicking the walk Hannah Montana, Elvis, or any other performer does as they perform on stage. It’s the example Christ set for us, His character, and His attitude that counts that we should be after.
It’s important we don’t listen to Satan’s lies about how we do indeed get to pick our own clothes. That there is no uniform or standard dress we all have to follow. Satan never has got it right but we can. All it takes is putting on love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and all the other things Jesus stood for. We can’t pick and choose which characteristic about Christ we want and leave the others behind in the dresser draw of the Bible. Wrong thinking!
The minute we try to put these items on in our lives they might not fit. But give it time. Learn to trust in God that He will help you out where you fall short in walking as He walked. If you learn to do that at a young age you are far more ahead than a lot of adults.
Dear Heavenly Father, praise you Lord that you have given us a dresser full of clothes that we are to wear in our lives spiritually. The Bible is full of them. Forgive us Lord for the times we find ourselves putting on something that shouldn’t be. Clothing such as anger, bad language, cheating, lieing, disobedience to our parents and other responsible adults and so much more. Help us Lord to be patient and to not compare how we look fully dressed to the kid next door. May we always know what truly counts is how we look in Your eyes wearing the clothes You picked out for us to wear. Heaven is coming and may we all be ready. Fully dressed and walking as You instructed us to walk. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
