The assignment given to my 9 year old granddaughter and her classmates on St Patrick’s Day was to build a leprechaun trap. Because legend has it that leprechaun’s are crafty and like to break the rules the kids needed to set a trap where if the leprechaun broke the rule they would fall into a trap. On one side was a door with a piece of gold used as the door handle for bait with a pot of gold inside. The rule for him to break was the “Exit only. Do not enter.” Inside in front of the pot of gold was a leprechaun fly swatter that was rigged to swat the little guy once he opened the door.
Around the corner of the box was a window that said, “Keep window closed” and “do not climb the pink rocks.” Inside was a slide with a piece of gold at the top. The slide was covered with slippery stuff that would send the leprechaun down the slide into the super glue at the bottom. Glue guaranteed to hold any leprechaun until you got the information you wanted of where their gold was.
Sure enough it worked, she took it to school and the next day there was leprechaun tracks all over the top of the box and the gold pieces were gone. The whole project was done in fun and games and the challenge to try and make the traps work.
Once completed as I looked at the box I thought about Satan and how he does that same thing to us. We are his little leprechauns sort of speak. People who seem to like the challenge of breaking the rules and falling for bait guaranteed to make us go for it. On the other side awaits a trap as Satan cackles in the background thinking its funny he got us to fall for his trickery once again.
Familiar bait he uses are smoking, drinking, drugs, sex, stealing, over-eating, disrespect, being cruel to others just to be cool or part of a crowd, to fit in where we think we want to belong. To be “up with the times,” they say. The traps on the other side are cancer, failed livers, diseases, jail time, bad health, and an emptiness we thought these things would fill.
Satan’s good at what he does. He knows exactly where we are the weakest as we quickly grab for his slimy bait. It’s up to us to watch out for the traps and be aware of the potential dangers ahead.
God is there to guide us through these moments in our lives. He won’t stop us from falling for one of the traps if we willingly walk in to them. As I tell my grandkids, don’t get into these habits or things in the first place then you don’t have to go through the agony of trying to get out of them.
Praise the Lord, God is there to help us out. He’s there before the trap, trying to get us to be alert and “pay attention” however we are too busy ignoring the warning signs. Instead of reaching for the bait and falling for the trap, reach for Jesus, the choice is ours. The end result is eternal blessings with Him.
